ABOUT THE DEGREE

The Technologist Degree in Gastronomic and Food Sciences trains professionals with scientific, technical, and operational competencies to intervene in the agri-food chain from a sustainable, innovative, and territorial perspective.

The program integrates knowledge in food sciences, gastronomy, technology, sustainability, and management, with an emphasis on designing culinary and value-added proposals based on local ingredients, food processing and preservation, food safety, traceability, responsible resource management, and the development of projects related to the food and gastronomy sector.

The Technologist Degree has a duration of 3 years, with a curriculum organized into 6 semesters. The complete program offers 285 available credits and a total workload of 4,300 hours. The program is delivered in a blended learning format. In-person sessions may take place at the UTEC locations in Minas, Paysandú, and Colonia La Paz, with one exception: the course unit “Analysis of Processed Cereals and Baking Tests” will be taught exclusively in Minas.

  • Graduates of Upper Secondary Education from Secondary School or DGETP-UTU, from any specialization track.
  • Graduates of DGETP-UTU Higher Schools of Gastronomy, with credit recognition.
  • Advanced students of tertiary or university degree programs in the field, subject to credit transfer and evaluation.
  • Active UTEC students in Food Department programs, with automatic credit transfer for completed coursework.
  • UTEC students from the Initial Option Cycle (CIO) in Science and Technology or the Bachelor's Degree in Food Analysis who have completed at least 50 credits.
  • Graduates of municipal or private Hospitality and Gastronomy institutes, eligible for credit transfer of up to 104 UTEC credits.
  • Graduates of the Escuelas Municipales del Hogar de Colonia with completed Upper Secondary Education, through the TRAMA modality and prior learning recognition.

NOTE: The TRAMA modality is a flexible learning path that recognizes prior knowledge and learning, enabling the construction of a customized educational track for each student. It may include prior learning validation and credit recognition, ensuring students do not need to repeat course content they have already mastered.

Graduates of the Technologist Degree in Gastronomic and Food Sciences will possess technical, operational, and management competencies to engage relevantly, ethically, and sustainably in agri-food systems from a territorial, multidisciplinary, and holistic perspective. They will be qualified to work across various levels of the food value chain, integrating productive, technological, culinary, and sustainability knowledge, with an emphasis on innovation, quality, and collaboration with local stakeholders.

Upon completing the program, graduates will be able to design culinary and value-added proposals based on local ingredients, sustainable practices, and healthy eating habits; apply technical knowledge in food production, processing, and preservation; manage production processes based on food safety, traceability, quality, sustainability, and circular economy criteria; participate in sustainable agri-food development projects; and implement innovative solutions for the full utilization of raw materials and the reduction of food loss and waste.

For the 2027 intake, the Central Governing Council of UTEC approved the distribution of quotas, class shifts, study modalities, and campuses for technical and undergraduate degree programs; you can access the resolution here.

For programs without admission quota limits or whose quotas are not filled during the first pre-enrollment period, a second application window opens in January-February. For programs with limited quotas, specific spots are guaranteed for residents of the city where the program is offered.

To complete your pre-enrollment process, participation in two key activities is required:

  • In-person orientation module: An informational session where you will learn in detail about the program's features, graduate profile, learning modality, academic requirements, and overall UTEC operations.
