ABOUT THE DEGREE

The Bachelor’s Degree in Dairy Science and Technology is a unique program in the country, where students can acquire and enhance professional and transversal skills that allow them to play a leading role in the dynamic world of milk and dairy product processing and industrialization, developing an integrated vision of production systems to improve the technological suitability of milk and its derivatives.

Graduates are trained to work in the dairy industry with autonomy and relevance within real contexts. They will also be prepared to face the challenges of the productive sector in a scenario where entry and/or permanence in the labor market depends on the quality of training and the ability to adapt to contextual needs.

The program provides a comprehensive theoretical-practical education, based on a competency-based approach. Students have the opportunity to develop new products, work with various matrices, and apply theoretical knowledge to existing problems in this productive area.

The general objective of the program is to train professionals specialized in dairy science and technology who can meet the needs of the productive sector in the country and the region, considering current and growing consumer demands regarding nutritional, convenience, sensory, and ethical aspects.

The specific objectives of the program include:

  • Training professionals capable of participating in different areas of milk and dairy product processing, designing and developing innovative products, joining R&D teams, acquiring skills to be part of service teams in the sector (laboratories, supplies, consulting, controls, records, and legal frameworks before public and private institutions), and being able to create their own ventures in the dairy sector.

  • Developing competencies related to safety, traceability, and environmental sustainability.

  • Promoting innovation in dairy products and dairy production systems.

  • Encouraging the incorporation of specialized professionals into the local and/or regional productive ecosystem, where graduates can achieve leadership roles in processing, quality, safety, R&D+i, among others.

  • Contributing to the generation of a critical mass of professionals focused on the strategic issues defined by the dairy industry and the state of the art.

This program includes an intermediate degree of Technologist in Dairy Science and Technology, which will allow students to enter the labor market with a qualification while continuing their bachelor’s studies.

  • High School graduates from the Technical and Professional Education Council.
  • For graduates of the Dairy Industry Technician program (DGETP-UTU), the Technologist in Dairy Production Systems Management (DGETP-UTU/UTEC), the Chemical Technologist (DGETP-UTU/Udelar/UTEC), and the Bachelor’s Degree in Food Analysis (UTEC), this program offers study continuity, allowing them to graduate after completing six semesters, four semesters, or two semesters (for entrants from LAA).
  • Advanced students from higher education degrees and/or university degrees in the area, who will comply with the validation procedure established in the institutional regulations.

Students from the CIO in Science and Technology from the University of the Republic, Northern Cenur, with at least 50 earned credits will be able to pre-enroll to UTEC, even if they have not taken the Higher Secondary Education track required by the degree they are applying to.

Graduates of the Technologist in Dairy Science and Technology will be competent to:

  • Manage and provide advice to existing ventures for the improvement of products and technological processes used in the dairy industry, within the framework of current regulations.

  • Understand and manage the processes used in the dairy industry.

  • Control the quality and safety of dairy products and the inputs used for their production.

  • Select and carry out analytical techniques applied to the analysis of dairy products.
